Google Merchant Center’s 2026 Update: What Hong Kong Retailers Should Prepare Now

Google Merchant Center 2026 product feed update for Hong Kong

Product feeds are operational infrastructure. A small mismatch between a landing page and Merchant Center can affect eligibility, while weak titles or images can make an approved product less useful to shoppers. Google’s 2026 product-data update gives retailers time to improve several parts of that infrastructure before later requirements are enforced.

The official update was published on 14 April 2026. Some changes apply immediately; others begin on 31 January 2027. Hong Kong retailers should treat the notice as a preparation window, not a reason to wait.

What changed immediately in 2026

A new optional video link attribute

Google introduced an optional video_link attribute for product videos. The videos may help show a product in use or from multiple angles and can enhance how products appear across Google.

Use a product-specific video that accurately represents the item. Avoid a generic brand reel attached to every SKU. Maintain a clear relationship between the feed item, landing page and video content, and monitor Merchant Center for processing issues.

More product-level shipping detail

The update adds shipping options at product level, including a handling cutoff time and minimum order value. It also adds loyalty-program and loyalty-tier labels within shipping information.

These fields are useful only when operations can honour them. Confirm cutoff times with fulfilment teams, account for weekends and holidays, and ensure the landing page or policy information does not conflict with the feed.

The image requirement coming in January 2027

Google says the minimum resolution for image_link and additional_image_link will increase to 500 by 500 pixels across product categories and marketing methods from 31 January 2027. Warnings began with the 2026 announcement, giving merchants time to identify affected images.

Do not upscale a poor source image and assume the work is complete. Build a replacement queue using original photography or high-quality approved assets. Check crop, background, colour accuracy, variant representation and mobile legibility. Keep promotional text and overlays aligned with Google’s image rules.

Audit the fundamentals before adding new fields

A sophisticated feed cannot compensate for unstable basics. Review:

  • ID: stable and unique for the product; never reused for a different item.
  • Title: accurate, readable and differentiated by relevant attributes.
  • Description: specific to the product, with useful features and specifications rather than promotional filler.
  • Identifiers: correct brand and GTIN where assigned and required.
  • Price and availability: matching the landing page and checkout reality.
  • Images: correct product and variant, strong resolution and accessible URL.
  • Link: a working canonical landing page for the exact item or valid variant.
  • Shipping and returns: current, consistent and operationally achievable.

Fix account-level warnings and disapprovals at their source. Manual patches that are not reflected in the commerce platform tend to break during the next sync.

Keep the feed, landing page and structured data aligned

Google Search Central recommends sharing product data through structured data on product pages, a Merchant Center feed, or both. Using both can increase eligibility across experiences and help Google understand and verify details.

Product structured data can describe information such as price, availability, ratings, shipping and returns when the relevant requirements are met. The markup must reflect visible, current page content. Do not add review ratings that the page does not legitimately display, or availability that is updated more slowly than the store.

For variants, keep the relationship between parent and variant products clear. Ensure the landing URL opens the advertised colour, size or option where required, and that the image and price match that selection.

Prepare product video as a conversion asset

A useful product video answers a buying question. Depending on the item, show scale, texture, setup, movement, comparison, installation or the contents of the package. Add captions where speech matters and keep claims supportable.

Measure more than views. Track whether shoppers who engage with video proceed to product detail, add to cart, begin checkout or purchase. Use the evidence to decide which product families deserve further production.

Plan for local inventory carefully

Retailers with physical stores may also use local product data and eligible local inventory programmes. Google’s local product specification requires accurate item identifiers and store-related information. Store-specific landing pages and availability must reflect the real location.

Do not advertise pickup or local stock that staff cannot fulfil. Align store codes, inventory systems, Business Profiles and customer-service procedures before expanding local campaigns.

A 12-week preparation plan

  1. Weeks 1–2: export diagnostics and classify every issue by product count, revenue importance and technical owner.
  2. Weeks 3–4: stabilise IDs, identifiers, price, availability and landing-page matching.
  3. Weeks 5–6: audit all primary and additional images against the coming 500-by-500 minimum; commission replacements.
  4. Weeks 7–8: validate shipping, cutoff, minimum-order and loyalty information with operations.
  5. Weeks 9–10: pilot product-specific videos on a small, commercially important set.
  6. Weeks 11–12: validate structured data, rerun diagnostics and compare product engagement and conversion quality.

Make Merchant Center part of the operating rhythm

Assign owners for feed data, website data, fulfilment policy, creative assets and analytics. Review diagnostics routinely rather than only when campaigns decline. Record major catalogue or platform changes so errors can be traced quickly.
